Announced yesterday, the Sony NEX-VG10E is the world's first consumer interchangeable lens HD camcorder.
If you read this blog, you will already know this was on its way as Sony have given us sneak preview videos.
The camera uses the same 14.2 mp CMOS sensor as the NEX-5 camera, launched recently. It also uses the same E-mount lenses whilst also offering the option of A-mount SLR lenses by using a mount adaptor.
The camera records in 24mbps AVCHD onto either SD or Memory Stick Pro Duo cards. At present it records only at 1080i 50fps - we would expect another model to follow (maybe a Sony Pro version?) that will offer 24/25p.
The standard lens included is an image-stablised E18-200mm f3.5-6.3 that offers a 11x optical zoom range. Unusual for a camcorder (though no real surprise here), there is no zoom servo - it's done manually using the ring.
The camera comes with a quite elaborate built-in mic. How good it will be, we will see. At least there is a jack for adding an external mic.
Battery power will be one of the camera's greatest advantages with around 6 hours recording possible with an optional high-power battery. Obviously there is no limit also in terms of continual shooting - you are only limited by the space on the card.
The camcorder will be available late September and naturally we will be stocking it.
