The XL1S
maximises the capability of the DV format by using
a 3-CCD system, assigning a separate CCD to each
primary color (red, green, and blue). With the use
of a beam-splitting prism to precisely separate
the light passing through the lens, the entire
process achieves outstanding detail with highly
reliable color reproduction to meet the demands of
the high-end production field.
Pixel
Shift
The camcorder
also employs advanced CCD technology called Pixel
Shift to solve common shooting problems. With the
use of this signal processing technique the XL1S
realises a wider dynamic range, reduced vertical
smearing, and brighter video in low light without
sacrificing its high resolution.
Canon has chosen
to incorporate larger-sized pixels in each CCD to
deliver outstanding results when shooting in super
low-light situations. By optimizing the central
portion of the camera head, which handles small
level signals in CCD peripheral circuit, top-class
horizontal resolution for worldwide DV standards
is realized. The noise level of the XL1S is
improved by 14dB over the XL1, giving clearer
images in dark conditions.
Optical
Image Stabiliser
This camcorder is
supplied with an Optical Image Stabilised 16x Zoom
Lens IS II, which delivers exceptionally clear,
sharp images by resolving over 600 TV lines -
exceeding the DV standard of 500 TV lines. This
high-performance lens also includes Canon's "SuperRange"
Variable Angle Prism for enhanced optical image
stabilization. SuperRange goes one step further
than other optical image stabilizers, by examining
the image after it is received by the CCD and
detecting any low-frequency vibrations missed by
the gyro. Thus greatly improving performance for
low frequency vibration.
Four-channel
simultaneous recording capability.
Six programmed
exposure modes, including shutter (Tv) and
aperture (Av) priority modes for automatic
operation and a manual mode for complete creative
control.
Three recording
modes: a Normal Movie mode, appropriate for
conventional recording of moving images; a Frame
Movie mode, making it possible to capture sharp,
blur-free stop-action images at 25 individual
frames per second; and a Photo mode, for shooting
picture-perfect single images.
IEEE 1394 digital
interface, permitting the XL1S to be used with DV
compatible computers for various multimedia
applications.
The magnesium
alloy casing of the XL1S is lightweight and easy
to manage yet highly durable, providing heavy-duty
protection. The camcorder's unique and ergonomical
shoulder-mount design and adjustable shoulder
brace ensures balance and support while shooting.
