Capturing Beautiful Beaches and the Magical Milky Way on the Wild Isle of Coll

Capturing Beautiful Beaches and the Magical Milky Way on the Wild Isle of Coll

We featured Rachael Clarke’s work not so long ago after she travelled to the Isle of Lewis and we were delighted when she got back in touch in anticipation of another trip. Rachael travelled back to Scotland to photograph landscapes and astrophotography – this time on the Isle of Coll. If you didn’t see Rachael’s first case study, you can see it here.

Rachael chose to hire the Sigma 24mm f1.4 DG HSM | Art EF lens to use on her Canon EOS 5D Mark III, along with a set of Tiffen variable ND filters and a Canon TC-80N3 remote and again, the results are incredibly inspiring! Over to Rachael…

"After a couple of years visiting the Outer Hebrides, I was looking for somewhere new and different (but not too different) to go – which is when the Isle of Coll caught my eye.

Part of the Inner Hebrides, Coll is small, empty and rugged, with wonderful deserted beaches and dark skies helped by a complete lack of streetlights. There's only one village and 200 people, but enough beaches and hills to keep you busy for a week."

"On Wednesdays you can also take the ferry over to the busier island of Tiree – which holds the official record for being the sunniest place in the UK.

In preparation, I packed as many lenses as I could into my rucksack to take them over the machair and sand dunes to the beaches, and set my alarm for 1.30am so I could climb a hill, look to the east, and capture the Milky Way."

"Because it was heading towards summer I had to start stacking the ND filters to ensure the lens didn't flare on the long exposures. I like the Tiffen filters because I pack everything into a small space and I can't use up my precious banana and water space for square filters – I've even bought a graduated 1.2 ND Tiffen to up my sunrise game."

"The Sigma 24mm f1.4 Art is great for both seascapes and astrophotography – with its wide aperture absorbing lots of light and its wide angle able to get as much of the surrounding landscape as possible. My only regret is that I didn't find a way to fit my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM in my rucksack to capture the seals playing in the surf!"

We would like to thank Rachael again for taking part in our customer case study, the Isle of Coll looks absolutely stunning. We hope she manages to nab those seal shots soon!
