Fujifilm GFX 50S: Full specification released

Fujifilm GFX 50S: Full specification released

When Fujifilm introduced us to the GFX 50S medium format camera at Photokina last year, it’s fair to we were as excited and impressed as everyone else. They have now released the full specification, availability more detail about the new range of GF lenses they have designed specifically for this camera.

The GFX 50S features a 43.8 x x32.9mm, 51.4 MP sensor, making it approximately 1.7x larger than a full frame sensor, which Fujifilm say produces 'dramatically better resolution, sensitivity performance and tone reproduction than a full frame sensor, with an equivalent number of pixels, due to the larger size of the individual pixels.'

Fujifilm has used the same X Processor Pro image engine that is featured in the X-Pro2 and X-T2 models, which brings the X-Series popular ‘Film Simulation’ features to the GFX.

A compact and lightweight (825g body only) magnesium alloy body ‘allows for easy handheld shooting despite being a medium format digital camera’ and a detachable EVF further increases shooting flexibility. The EVF boasts a brand new 0.5inch 3.69M-dot organic EL panel that uses 5 glass elements to achieve 0.85x magnification, with a wide viewing angle (40 degrees diagonal). The angle of the viewfinder can also be changed by attaching the EVF-TL1 tilt adapter, sold separately, by up to 90 degrees when shooting horizontally and ±45 degrees when shooting portrait.

The 3.2 inch, 2.36M-dot LCD touchscreen on the rear allows the user to confirm accurate focus and supports touch control for a variety of functions such as menu selection and zooming into images.

Fujifilm has developed a new focal plane shutter specifically for this camera. It has a maximum shutter speed of 1/4000 (or 1/16000 when using the electronic shutter) with a flash sync speed of 1/125 or less. The 117-point contrast AF system with distance measuring points ‘dramatically improves focusing accuracy in the medium format with a shallow depth of field’.

The ISO ranges from 100 - 12800, with an extended ISO range of 50 -1024000.

Fujifilm also developed the brand new large diameter G Mount specifically for the G Format sensor. A range of dedicated G Mount Fujinon GF Lenses has also been developed for the GFX 50S, which Fujifilm say ‘have been designed to support resolutions of up to 100MP.' Three lenses will be released at the same time as the GFX - the Fujinon GF 63mm F2.8 R WR, the Fujinon GF 32-64mm F4 R LM WR and the Fujinon GF 120mm F4 R LM OIS WR Macro.

Inheriting its looks and design from Fujifilm's X Series cameras, the GFX 50S dedicated dials to set aperture, shutter speed and ISO and also features a 1.28 inch LCD screen on the top of the body that displays relevant exposure information.

The Fujifilm GFX 50S will be available from February 23, 2017 but I suspect it will be March before we have them in stock to hire.  We will let you know as we know more on that date.

We will have a more in-depth hands-on preview soon.

This figure is not a guarantee of battery’s working capacity. At low temperatures, the number of frames per charge decreases.
