JUST ANNOUNCED: Sony Unveils 24mp A7 III, With New BSI Sensor and 4K Video

Chief among the A7 III's features is a newly developed backside-illuminated, 24.2-megapixel sensor that offers up to 15 stops of dynamic range. Rumours had been swirling late last year that an A7 III would share the same sensor as the A9. This new sensor doesn't share the same stacked design as the A9; however, it does offer a front-end LSI that doubles the readout speed from the A7 III's sensor. Not only does this improve AF speed, but it also promises to enhance image quality with better noise reduction. The Sony A7 III provides a native sensitivity range of IS 100-51,200, which is expandable down to ISO 50 and up to ISO 204,800.

Sony has also greatly improved the A7 III's autofocus system compared to the A7 II. The new camera offers 425 contrast AF points that work with a 693-point focal-plane phase-detection AF system inherited from the A9. AF response and tracking are both twice as fast as before, thanks to a new BIONZ X processing engine, while Eye AF and the addition of touch focusing expand the amount control the user has over focus.

Because of that new BIONZ X image processing system, the A7 III is twice as fast as its predecessor, Sony says, enabling it to capture full resolution images at up to 10fps in burst mode of up to 177 JPEGs, 89 compressed raw images or 40 uncompressed raw files. The Sony A7 III can also shoot up to 8fps continuously in its live view mode.

On the video side, the new A7 III can record 4K UHD video (3840x2160 pixels) using full pixel readout without pixel binning, to collect about 2.4x the amount of data required for 4K movies.

An HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile is available on the A7 III as well, which supports Instant HDR workflow, allowing HDR HLG compatible TVs to playback beautiful, true-to-life 4K HDR imagery. Furthermore, both S-Log2 and S-Log3 are available for increased colour grading flexibility, as well as Zebra Pattern functionality, Gamma Display Assist and proxy recording. The camera can also record Full HD at 120 fps at up to 100 Mbps, allowing footage to be reviewed and eventually edited into 4x or 5x slow motion video files in Full HD resolution with AF tracking.

Other features include a new NP-FZ100 battery, which Sony says provides the longest battery life of any mirrorless camera on the market at 710 still images on a single charge. The Sony A7 III also employs the company’s 5-axis optical in-body image stabilisation with a 5.0 step shutter speed advantage. As for the body design, Sony says the A7 III is both dust and moisture resistant and offers 11 custom function buttons that can be assigned to some 81 different settings. You’ll also find dual SD card slots, an AF point joystick and a SuperSpeed USB 3.1 Type-C terminal.
