Panasonic launches Lumix G9 flagship stills camera
8 November 2017 | Category: Stills
The Panasonic LUMIX G9 inherits a lot of the same sophisticated technology as its sibling, the GH5, including its 20.3-million-pixel Four Thirds sensor, Venus processing engine and 225-point AF system.
Aimed at wildlife photographers, one of the G9’s key selling points is its new High Resolution Mode in which the camera shifts its sensor during a sequence of eight images and combines them into a final image that boasts 80-megapixel resolution. However, this mode should only be used with a tripod, Panasonic says.
An enhanced in-body Image Stabilisation system also promises sharp images at up to six shutter speeds slower, even when using a telephoto lens, Panasonic says.
Combining BIS (Body Image Stabiliser, 5-axis) and OIS (Optical Image Stabiliser, 2-axis), the G9’s 5-axis Dual IS 2 can compensate for larger movements that were conventionally uncontrollable, Panasonic says. This is of particular benefit in telephoto shots and in adverse situations, such as at night or when shooting with one hand. The 5-axis Dual IS 2 also works for both photo and motion picture recording, including 4K video.
Wildlife photographers will also like the G9’s burst mode offering of 60fps in single autofocus mode, or 20fps at full resolution when using continuous autofocus. Other features include Panasonic’s 4K and 6K Photo modes, Focus Stacking and Post Focus. The camera also shoots 4K video 24, 25, 30, 50 or 60p despite being billed as a stills camera.
The G9’s body design also offers some improvements, chiefly a joystick for changing the AF point and dual memory card slots. And the Status LCD on the G9’s top plate is the largest in its class, according to Panasonic.
Panasonic has also introduced a range of accessories designed to enhance the G9’s usability. A new Battery Grip extends the shooting life of the camera as well as making shooting in vertical orientation more comfortable. There’s also a new Eye-Cup, a quick battery charger and a shoulder strap.
The Panasonic LUMIX G9 will be available HERE from January 2018.
LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm f/2.8 Power OIS Lens
Also launched as a companion lens for the Lumix G9 is the first Leica-branded fixed focal length super-telephoto lens.
Offering a 400mm equivalent focal length, the LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm f/2.8 Power OIS comes bundled with a 1.4x Teleconverter(DMW-TC14) that boost the lens’ focal length further to 560mm (35mm equivalent).
A separate 2.0x Teleconverter DMW-TC20 can also be purchased, offering an equivalent focal length of 800mm.
The new Leica DG ELMARIT 200mm f/2.8 lens is comprised of 15 elements in 13 groups, including two UED (Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses. Panasonic says its optical design allows for high resolution, high contrast images with minimal distortion and chromatic aberration. A triple linear motor and max 240fps sensor drive ensures autofocusing is precise and the LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm f/2.8 Power OIS Lens is splash-proof, dust-proof and freeze-proof down to -10 degrees.
The LEICA DG ELMARIT 200mm f/2.8 Power OIS will be available HERE from December 2017.
