FX and DX explained
The Nikon F mount has been around since 1959. Unlike Canon who
brought out a new EF mount with the introduction of the EOS autofocus
cameras, Nikon merely extended the functionality of the mount to meet
the new requirements. This means that the Nikon F mount has the
largest variety of lenses available for any manufacturer. The FX term
denotes the full frame format, currently used by the Nikon D700, D3s and
D3x. FX lenses can also be used on the smaller sensor cameras.
The Nikon DX format is an alternative name used by Nikon corporation for
APS-C image sensor format being approximately 24×16 mm. Its dimensions are
about 2/3 those of the 35mm film format (29mm vs 43mm diagonal, approx.).
The format was created by Nikon for its digital SLR cameras, many of which
are equipped with DX-sized sensors. DX format is very similar in size to
sensors referred to by other camera manufacturers (Canon, Pentax, and Sony)
as APS-C, so the terms are sometimes used interchangeably.
Nikon has produced a relatively small variety of lenses for the DX format,
most of which are consumer-level zoom lenses.
Whilst DX lenses can be used on FX cameras, you will most probably experience vignetting.
