You can keep your F Stops…

With our new studio space up and running and proving to be a real winner, we decided it was time to shine a literal spotlight on some of the best cine lens offerings we have here at Hireacamera. Step forward the DZO Catta FF Zoom bundle, Samyang Xeen CF Cinema Kit, and two of our most popular Sigma Zooms.

Kit List for shooting

Canon EOS R5 Canon

RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM

Lastolite Plain Collapsible 1.5 x 1.8m

Rotolight Anova Pro II Head w/ barn doors

Manfrotto Ranker Stand

Rotolight NEO 3 – 3 head kit w/ stands

We’d been shooting predominantly with the Sony a7 IV – a wonderful all-rounder with renowned low-light capabilities, but we thought it was time to give Canon a chance to shine. Picking the R5 paired with the Canon RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM, we positioned our products on a flight case in front of a Lastolite collapsible background and began setting up our lighting.

In previous shoots we felt we’d relied too heavily on coloured lighting, almost over-saturating our scene somewhat and losing key detail from our products. To remedy this, we decided to use Rotolight’s Anova Pro as a large, diffused keylight, and combine with the Rotolight Neo 3 3-head kit, but only for accent lighting. We positioned one of the Neos on the floor behind the flight case and used the other two on stands stage left and right - et voila, colourful, stereo lighting that doesn’t overpower the scene!

DZO Catta FF Zoom Bundle – E Mount

This is a showstopping lens bundle – even the case the lenses come in is beautiful, and equipped with screws, caps and shims in their own little cut-out pockets. The lenses themselves are light, sleek and pleasing on the eye, with the sort of precision etching on the chassis that makes you feel thoroughly confident in the abilities of the manufacturer.

This bundle includes the 35-80mm T/2.9 and the 70-135mm T/2.9, with both weighing in at less than 1.6kg. 16 blades makes for extremely pleasing bokeh, and with a manual focus range of 270 degrees, precise control is at the heart of these lenses.

Samyang Xeen CF Cinema Kit

Having long been the cinematographer’s hidden secret, most savvy shooters will already be familiar with Samyang’s products. With the Xeen CF kit however, the manufacturer has reached new heights. The first thing that strikes you about the design is the makeup of the shell. These lenses are created with a carbon-fibre housing to make them surprisingly lightweight whilst still feeling robust and durable.

Weighing in between 0.9 and 1.2 kilos, these lenses are perfect for gimbal work where a lack of weight makes all the difference. The carbon fibre and glass design also makes these lenses look really cool – we realise that isn’t the most important thing about them, but it is worth saying! This kit includes five lenses: 16mm T2.6, 24mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 50mm T1.5 and 85mm T1.5.

Sigma Cine Zoom Lenses

Now for a couple of real classics that remain ever-popular on our site; the Sigma 18-35mm T2 and the Sigma 50-100mm T2 in EF mount. With a consistent T2 across the entire zoom range, and resolutions ready for 6K and 8K filming, it’s no surprise thousands of filmmakers rely on these gorgeous bokeh machines.

There are some lovely features on these lenses, from standardised gear positions to the luminous paint used to help you see the etchings and markings in lower light, these are cleverly designed and silent in use. With 100% metal bodies, whilst still weighing in under 2 kilos, this precision glass is well worth a look if you’ve a filmic project in mind.

Needless to say, all these lenses are precise, well-built and cool looking, and any set will help you capture gorgeous footage on whatever your next project might be. Hire links below!
