There's something to be said for a challenge
For many in our modern world, ‘stuff' is near-instantly available. From same-day shopping to your door, to immediate movie streaming and your takeaway delivered in 20 minutes, it’s easy to stop enjoying convenience and start expecting it. There are however, rich rewards on offer when things aren’t quite so easy - like actually leaving your house, or creating a dream dinner with nothing but your culinary skill and a Nigella book. Sometimes having to try a bit harder yields far better results than the convenient option, and you’re likely to feel richer for it.
To crowbar this analogy into the world of photography, a 50mm prime won’t give you the smorgasbord of simple compositional options a 70-200mm will, but it’s entirely up to you whether you treat that as restrictive or liberating. Naturally, commercial pros on a paid shoot will take the lens that’s right for the job, but that doesn’t mean you have to when you’re heading out on a trip at the weekend.
Primes like Canon’s RF 50mm F1.2L and Nikon’s Z 50mm F1.8 S NIKKOR also offer substantially sharper image quality than any zoom, are easier to wield when hand-holding, have superior low light performance and provide the creamiest of creamy bokeh - glorious orbs of light and contrast you’ll never get tired of capturing.
Another benefit of sticking with a 50mm rather than a lengthy zoom is the 'heft aspect’, a thoroughly technical term. Travelling through the weekend with your cheeky prime will make you feel limber and agile, letting you keep your camera close, ready to catch whatever the world is kind enough to send your way.
And sure, you might miss the odd opportunity here and there, a distant happening, something flying past the horizon, or timid creatures that don’t want to introduce themselves, but you’ll make up for it by moving about a bit and seeing more - enjoying the satisfaction of solving that compostional puzzle.
Besides, the latest cameras have such monumentally high megapixel counts, you can always crop in post - if you really must.
The Canon RF 50mm F1.2L and Nikon Z 50mm F1.8 S NIKKOR are available to hire now, along with a huge selection of cameras, other lenses, and accessories.
