CUSTOMER CASE STUDY: Capturing the atmosphere at the 2018 NFL
14 January 2019 | Category: Case Studies
A few weeks ago, Gavin Hardy tagged us on Twitter with some fantastic images he shot for the NFL at Wembley Stadium, having hired two Sony telephoto lenses from us to go with his own a7 III bodies. As soon as we saw them, we were keen to see more and Gavin kindly obliged! Over to Gavin…
So the shoot is for NFL UK and my job is to deliver photos of the event in "real time" directly to the NFL UK social media team. This means that they can get good quality content on Instagram, Instagram stories, Twitter and Facebook during the game. And while they do like a few shots of the game, my priority is really to capture the atmosphere of the whole thing. Fans, stadium players, pre-game and during.
To do this I shoot with 2 Sony a7III bodies. Why Sony? Well I've been shooting with Sony since the original a7, combined with Canon. One of the things that originally drew me to the Sony a7 was the ability to transfer photos from your camera to your smartphone, something that is a necessity for me to get the images across to the NFL UK social media team quickly. And because Sony have been offering this capability for 4 years it's now probably the best, most reliable camera to offer this. Throw in the improved AF, battery life and dual card slots on the a7III, it meant I could go fully Sony this year.
With regards to lenses, as most of the time I'm a wedding photographer my lenses are all wide to portrait length primes: 24mm 1.4, 35mm 1.4, 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8, which is why I use Hireacamera for events such as this. So this year I covered all three games. I hired the 70-200mm 2.8 for the first game and the 100-400 f4.5-5.6 for the final two. This is my fourth year covering the event and I have only ever used Hireacamera because ordering through the website is easy and I know I will always have my lens on time. This year I used the pick-up service at Camera World in London for one of the games, which was a nice option as I was in London the day before shooting a wedding. Plus, should I ever need to call the office I always genuinely get great customer service from the team.
Well it’s safe to say that Gavin certainly captured the atmosphere of the game! Thank you, Gavin, for sharing your brilliant images with us, and for your very kind words. Take a look at his website and social media accounts below, not only is he a very talented sports photographer, but his wedding photography is great too!
If you have something you’re particularly proud of, having hired our equipment then please do share it with us, we can’t promise to publish everything we receive but we love to see your work nonetheless!
