Why does Hireacamera use tracking technology?

As a provider of high-value professional cinema and photographic equipment, we have a responsibility to our insurers and our business to protect our assets. Occasionally, we include GPS tracking technology in our equipment or flight cases to assist in theft recovery and to prevent fraudulent hire.

Is every order tracked?

No. Tracking is not universal. We use a discretionary, risk-based approach to determine which orders require a tracker. This is usually based on the total value of the kit, the length of the hire period, and the delivery destination.

What data are you collecting about me?

We only collect geolocation data (the physical coordinates and movement history of the equipment). We do not use trackers to monitor transit speeds, nor do we use the data for marketing or to profile your behaviour. The technology is strictly a digital security lock for the physical asset.

How long do you keep tracking data?

We operate a strict 3-day (72-hour) retention policy. Geolocation logs are automatically and permanently deleted on a rolling basis. We only access or retain data for longer periods if an item is reported stolen, lost, or is involved in an insurance claim.

Does this breach my privacy or GDPR?

Not at all. We process this data under the "Legitimate Interest" provision of the UK GDPR. To protect your privacy, we have implemented "Privacy by Design" measures, such as our 3-day data purge, to ensure we are only holding the minimum amount of data necessary to secure our property.

Will the tracker interfere with my shoot?

No. The trackers we use are low-power devices that operate on standard cellular and GPS frequencies. They are designed to be "production-safe" and will not interfere with wireless follow-focus systems, audio equipment, or wireless video transmitters (such as Teradek systems).

Can I opt-out or disable the tracker?

Because the trackers are integrated for insurance and security purposes, they cannot be disabled. However, because data is purged every 72 hours, your long-term location history is never stored or accessible by our team.

Who has access to the location data?

Access is strictly limited to our senior operations team. Data is only ever viewed if an item fails to be returned as scheduled or is reported missing. In the event of a theft, we may share the data with the Police or our insurance underwriters to assist in recovery.

I am employing a crew; what are my responsibilities?

If you are hiring the equipment on behalf of a production or providing it to freelancers/employees, you should notify them that the kit or flight cases are GPS-tracked for security purposes. Our Terms of Use provide the legal framework for this notification.
