Our lovely Hannah, modelling the new Sony FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS.
Weighing in at only 2,895 grams, it is of course perfect for sports, wildlife and aviation photography. PLUS, it’s currently the rarest Sony lens in the country! Read on to find out why we think this lens is set to be hot stuff this summer.
Innovative G Master F2.8 super telephoto
Sony’s most advanced lens technologies allow this large-aperture super telephoto lens to achieve extraordinary speed, outstanding G Master resolution and bokeh, plus professional reliability and control. In addition to this, the SEL400F28GM is the remarkably lightweight – weighing in at only 2,895g and provides phenomenal handheld freedom and performance.
Speed that maximises body performance
New XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors deliver higher thrust than conventional motors and achieve up to 5 times the accuracy when tracking moving-subjects when paired with current and future camera bodies. Two of these new motors and newly developed algorithms quietly drive the lens’ large focus element group faster and more precisely than ever before. The full speed performance of advanced camera bodies can be applied to capture genres such as wildlife, sports and aviation.
Stunning G Master resolution and bokeh
Extremely high design standards ensure outstanding resolution right to the edge of the frame. Three fluorite elements minimise chromatic aberration and spherical aberration has been carefully reduced during design and manufacture to achieve the highest possible bokeh quality. Optional high-performance 1.4x and 2.0x tele-converters are supported and provide outstanding resolution and contrast – even at 800mm.
Remarkably lightweight – only 2,895g
The quantity of elements at the front of the lens barrel are reduced thanks to an innovative optical design that includes three fluorite elements, thus reducing the weight of the lens. Weight is reduced further thanks to durable magnesium alloy components. Portability and handling are outstanding, and ideal balance affords agile, easy operation – whether shooting handheld or on a monopod.
Durability and reliability for challenging conditions
Dust and moisture resistant design provides the reliability needed for outdoor use in harsh conditions. The durable magnesium alloy used for the lens barrel exterior, tripod mount and interior barrel components achieves tough durability whilst minimising overall weight. The front lens element features a fluorine coating that helps to keep it clean whilst making it easier to wipe dirt and fingerprints away.
Features for professional shooting needs
Full-time DMF allows manual focus to be engaged simply by rotating the focus ring, even whilst shooting in AF-C mode. Optical image stabilization is built-in and a new Mode 3 setting features an advanced algorithm that provides optimum stabilization for dynamic sports action, whilst also making framing easier. Four focus hold buttons and a focus ring with Linear Response MF enhance versatility further.
