Hire Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM | A (Nikon)

Full-frame prime lenses covering a 20mm focal length with a fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 are few and far between. Though it’ll be most popular with people who specialise in astrophotography, its stunning optical performance can be applied to landscapes, interiors and architecture. It’s a large and heavy lens that features a focus distance window and bulbous front element. A permanently fixed petal-shape hood protects the latter.

It returns its best results across the frame at f/4 and is just as sharp in the centre at f/1.4 as it is at f/8. It’s an exceptional prime for shooting in low-light conditions. The only downside is that it’s not weather sealed.

Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art: The Detailed Breakdown

The Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art combines advanced design capabilities with cutting-edge optical technologies. Built specifically to unlock the full potential of ultra-high-megapixel cameras, this lens offers unprecedented rendering performance and advanced control over light and composition.

By merging an ultra-wide 20mm focal length with a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, it creates a unique look. Photographers can easily contrast dramatic wide-angle perspectives against a shallow depth of field with a smooth, natural bokeh effect.

This mix makes the lens ideal for landscapes, starry night skies, low-light indoor snapshots, and creative portraits.

Engineering a World First

Achieving a wide 20mm focal length at an f/1.4 brightness required Sigma to push manufacturing boundaries. The lens utilizes a massive 59mm double aspherical glass element.

While producing aspherical optics of this scale was long considered nearly impossible, Sigma pulled from its rich history of complex lens design—such as the 12-24mm, 8-16mm, and the legendary 18-35mm f/1.8 Art—to build a high-precision production system capable of crafting it.

This complex optical architecture does more than just let in light. It aggressively minimizes distortion, transverse chromatic aberration, sagittal coma flare, and edge vignetting, delivering sharp edge-to-edge resolution even when shooting wide open.

Specialized Glass for Optical Perfection

Minimizing Chromatic Aberration

Color fringing is a notorious problem for wide, fast lenses, but Sigma combats this issue using a premium selection of low-dispersion glass elements.

The lens features two FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) and five SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements. This configuration neutralizes transverse chromatic aberration at the edges of the frame, while optimized power distribution controls axial aberration.

The result is a clean, high-contrast image entirely free from color smearing.

What is FLD Glass? FLD is a premium ultra-low-dispersion glass that matches the optical performance of fluorite. Its high transparency, incredibly low refractive index, and minimal dispersion help eliminate residual secondary spectrum errors that standard optical glass cannot correct.

Correcting Optical Distortion

Distortion is an inherent challenge in ultra-wide lenses that cannot be fixed by simply stopping down the aperture.

Sigma resolves this from the ground up. By controlling the angle of light as it hits the very first glass element, and pairing it with strategically placed aspherical elements, the lens suppresses distortion across the entire image field.

Built for the Ultra-High-Megapixel Era

In the early days of photography, bright optics were dubbed "high-speed lenses" because they compensated for low-sensitivity films in dark conditions. Today, that speed serves a double purpose.

While it remains perfect for evening, indoor, and low-light environments, its high resolution meets the strict demands of modern digital sensors.

Whether you need deep, tack-sharp depth of field across an architectural layout, or a crisp subject isolated against a beautifully blurred background, this lens delivers clean resolution from edge to edge.

Defeating Flare, Ghosting, and the Elements

Super Multi-Layer Coating

Sigma designed this lens to remain resilient against harsh, direct backlighting. During development, engineers used both digital simulations and physical photographic experiments to identify and eliminate the sources of reflections.

The addition of a proprietary Super Multi-Layer Coating further reduces flare and ghosting, preserving rich contrast in tough environments.

Premium Art Line Philosophy

Sigma organizes its collection into three distinct families: Contemporary, Sports, and Art. The Art line focuses entirely on optical excellence and rich expressive power.

These lenses are engineered for fine-art landscape capture, commercial portraiture, detailed still-lifes, and high-impact studio work—unleashing the creative potential of demanding photographers.
