For the best results, start by screwing the filter onto your lens and turning the ring to its lowest density setting (MIN).
Frame your composition and lock in your focus at this minimum setting. Variable filters can sometimes throw off autofocus systems when dialed to darker densities.
If your lens struggles to find its target, grab your focus at the MIN setting first. Then, switch your lens over to manual mode before rotating the ring to your chosen exposure level.
Exposure Calculation Example
As you darken the filter, your shutter speed will slow down to balance the incoming light. For instance, if an unfiltered outdoor shot reads at 1/500s at f/8, adding the filter at its minimum 2-stop density changes your shutter speed to 1/125s at f/8.
Maxing out the filter to 8 stops drops that speed down to 1/2 second. If you need an even longer exposure, you can stop down your aperture to pull the shutter time to 1 second at f/11, or 2 seconds at f/16.
