Overview: The Nikon SB-5000 Speedlight

The Nikon SB-5000 is a fast, dependable, and highly adaptable hot shoe flash designed to deliver professional lighting performance in both the studio and the field.

Compatible with FX and DX-format DSLRs, this i-TTL Speedlight works as an on-camera flash, a wireless commander, or a remote slave unit. It integrates smoothly into the Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS) while introducing powerful new features.

Its lightweight, compact footprint is paired with clean, straightforward controls. This design offers intuitive operation for fast-paced shooters who cannot afford to miss a moment when a story breaks.

Overcoming Line-of-Sight Limitations

The SB-5000 stands out as Nikon’s first Speedlight to feature wireless radio control. Working alongside an optional WR-R10 Wireless Remote Controller, the system operates across distances up to 30 meters.

This radio link completely removes the requirement for a direct line of sight between your master and slave units. You can confidently build complex off-camera lighting setups in environments where obstacles block your view or where harsh, direct sunlight overpowers traditional optical signals.

Flexible Multigun Configurations

When paired with the WR-R10 controller, the system can manage up to six distinct groups of SB-5000 units simultaneously.

Because the speedlight also maintains full backward compatibility with optical wireless triggering, you can easily mix legacy Nikon Speedlights into your multi-flash arrangements.

Onboard Cooling System for Rapid-Fire Shooting

Whether you are working a high-pressure red carpet or a fast-moving runway, the SB-5000 is engineered to stay cool under heavy workloads.

The flash features an internal onboard cooling system—a design milestone for compact clip-on units. By suppressing heat buildup directly inside the flash head, it eliminates unexpected thermal shut-offs during critical moments.

The system can handle a remarkable 120 flashes at 5-second intervals, or 84 bursts at 3-second intervals. It allows you to fire off more than 100 consecutive rapid-fire shots at full power without interruption.

Advanced Camera Control and Integration

At its core, the unit utilizes intelligent Through-The-Lens (i-TTL) flash control, sharing vital exposure data directly with your camera body.

The system also offers unified flash control. When the unit is attached to your hot shoe, you can adjust settings directly through your camera's internal menus or via a computer running Nikon's Camera Control Pro 2 software.

Streamlined Controls and Physical Build

Weighing in at just 420 grams (without batteries), the SB-5000 is lighter and more compact than its predecessor.

The rear layout features an uncluttered control panel with a large, high-readability LCD screen. A handy rotary multi-selector and a dedicated "i" button give you instant access to your most frequent custom functions or setup parameters in a streamlined list.

For bouncing light, the flexible flash head tilts from -7° up to 90°, and rotates a full 180° horizontally in both directions.
