Prime lenses are known for their pin sharp quality and super fast apertures. Though they also require you to physically move to frame your shot, this can encourage more creativity and consideration – particularly when shooting subjects like street and documentary photography. There's no shortage of choice in E mount, with Sony's own range of lenses and third party support from the likes of Sigma and Zeiss too.

Very large field angle and fast autofocus – combined with protection against dust and spray water for reliable photography in all weather: the ZEISS Batis 2.8/18 is the ideal full-frame lens for landscape, astro and architectural photography.
The number of full-frame prime lenses covering a 20mm focal length with a fast maximum aperture of f/1.4 are few and far between. Though it’ll be most popular with people who specialise in astrophotography, its stunning optical performance can be applied to landscapes, interiors and architecture. It’s a large and heavy lens that features a focus distance window and bulbous front element. A permanently fixed petal-shape hood protects the latter. It returns its best results across the frame at f/4 and is just as sharp in the centre at f/1.4 as it is at f/8. It’s an exceptional prime for shooting in low-light conditions. The only downside is that it’s not weather sealed.

The Sigma 24mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art is an all-new Art line lens featuring F1.4 brightness. Best-in-class optical performance ideal for nightscapes and cityscapes.
Fast wide-angle primes can be big and bulky, however that can’t be said about the FE 24mm F1.4 GM, which is considerably smaller and lighter than SLR equivalents. Sony has got the design and handling of lens just right. It feels perfectly matched with Sony a7-series full-frame cameras and provides a tactile aperture ring with a de-click switch that allows videographers to take silent aperture control. What impresses us most though is just how sharp it is. The level of sharpness at the edge of the frame at wide apertures left us gobsmacked. This fast prime sure packs a punch for its size and Sony users will love it.
