Sports photography made simpler

If you're capturing field sports or athletics action from the sidelines, a fast camera with burst options coupled with a 70-200mm is a great place to start. Invariably, anything shorter than this will be too far removed from the action and will only serve you well for establishing shots capturing a whole stadium or scene.

Many photographers also like to take lenses covering focal lengths up to 400mm, and for those extreme zooms, these can often be paired with extenders for a whopping great range. If weight is an issue, a good quality zoom like a 100-400mm could be all you need for your shoot - just be aware that this won't be as sharp as a prime, and the higher the aperture the harder it will be to separate your subject from the background.

For larger lenses, a monopod can be invaluable. Firstly, you can use the stability to capture some longer exposures and accentuate the action with a little background blur. Possibly more importantly, lenses can be rather heavy, and nothing beats giving your arms a rest!
